Kiahuna Plantation Folklore Hawaiian folklore tells the story that, long ago, when the moon and stars were just right, mermaids swam to shore and gathered on the great lawn of Kiahuna to serenade the sailors they loved and who were now tragically lost at sea. The mermaids sang their enchanting songs to guide the lost spirits back to paradise on Kauai, giving those souls the blessings of eternal peace and happiness. Only by hearing those mystical voices could the sailors find their way home to these unselfish maidens who loved them so completely. Governed by the strict laws of Neptune, the mermaids were forced to dry their tears and return to the sea before the first rays of sunrise brightened the skies to begin the next day. Even now, when one is very quiet and listens carefully, these sad and beautiful, magical voices can still be heard as the trade winds blow through the palm trees at legendary Kiahuna Plantation. And the mermaids' tears can still be seen every sunrise as the first rays of sunlight search for the lonely mermaids and kiss the morning dew in their memory. Copyright 2001, Michael Cowan << Back |
